Car Rider Line

Car Rider Line

For the safety of our students, staff, and fellow parents, please remember to follow the rules of our car rider line, particularly in the afternoon. Here are some important reminders about our car rider policy:

1. Find where the back of the line ends, which is typically weaved into the lower parking lot to help alleviate traffic back up on Sherwood Road.

2. Do not try to cut into the line in any way.  This includes trying to take a left into the line and blocking Sherwood Rd, creating dangerous situations.

3. You may not park your car and “pull” your child from the car rider area.

4. Finally, please remember that your child(ren) can always ride the bus as an alternative.

It’s ok to be idle…just don’t idle your engine.

It is CMS policy to turn off one’s engine while waiting in the carline. Official signs have been posted to indicate this. The reason?

Studies conducted during arrival and dismissal times at carpool areas, where cars idle, showed high levels of air pollutants. These pollutants are particularly hazardous to children since their lungs are still developing. Exposure is associated with an increased frequency of childhood illness and the reduction of lung function.

The 3 main pollutants of concern in our carline are Ozone (O3), Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) and Particulate Matter (PM). Without getting into a chemistry lesson, it is important to know that these pollutants are found where vehicles idle. The emissions can be dangerous to everyone in the vicinity, including your children and the staff who assist in the car line.

Turning off your car’s engine while you wait prior to 7:30 am and 3:00 pmis an easy, low-cost way to drastically reduce air pollution and prevent exposure to harmful pollutants. It will conserve gas, save you money and protect our health.
