Back to School Notes

A Word from Mr. Ruppenthal

A hearty welcome to all of our Bulldog families to the 2018-2019 school year! It is always so fun to see all the smiling faces return during the Back to School Open House and the first week of school. You can almost feel the excitement, anticipation and hope that a new school year brings! Our first week of school was a resounding success as students have settled into their new classrooms and are busily establishing routines and procedures and creating classroom communities.

We are excited about new staff members, many with years of experience, who will bring fresh ideas to our awesome HES staff. We are also excited about continuing along the path of innovation as we head in to year three of our Personalized Learning initiative. This year we will continue to emphasize the need to incorporate movement or “kinesthetic learning” into all of our classrooms.

I ask you to partner with us to ensure your child’s academic, social and effective growth. Please familiarize yourself with school procedures that are clearly outlined in your child’s planner. Pay particular attention to procedures governing morning arrival, afternoon and early dismissal and all matters regarding transportation. Many of these have already been outlined in the Bulldog Bulletin. Most important, please make sure you establish an open line of communication with your child’s teacher. That will be the key to your child’s success! Please plan to attend our Curriculum Night that will take place on Thursday, September 13 beginning at 5:30 pm. This will be a critical night of learning for parents, as teachers will closely go over classroom rules and expectations as well as a detailed explanation of what your child will be learning for the entire year in the various subject areas. We will again offer multiple sessions for those of you with more than one child here at HES.

Last, here are some important reminders regarding morning and afternoon car rider procedures to ensure a smooth arrival and dismissal:

  • All cars must wait in the car rider line in both the morning and afternoon. The line forms in one direction on Sherwood Rd. Vehicles are not permitted to turn left in to the parking lot from Sherwood.
  • Please pull up as far as possible in the morning car rider line.
  • Students may enter the building beginning at 7:30 am. Please do not drop your student off before that time as they will be unsupervised.
  • If you arrive after the 8:00 am tardy bell then you must park and sign your child in at the main office. Please make every attempt to have your child on time to school.
  • Do not park and attempt to pull your child from the car rider area in order to avoid waiting in the car rider line. Students will not be released to parents. This is a matter of both safety and fairness.
  • Beginning September 4, all visitors must check in through the Lobby Guard system. This includes parents who walk their students to class. Please consider letting your child develop a sense of independence and allow them to walk unaccompanied to class.
